Introductory Flute Class for Kids ages 7-9

In this 8 week beginner group class that’s entirely online, your child will learn the foundations of the instrument through engaging activities and playful instruction.

Flute Foundations class info:

AGES: 7-9

WHERE: Online! Zoom link provided with registration.

PRICE: $160 with no flute (or $290 with Nuvo flute included)

TUITION INCLUDES:

  • Eight (45 minute) weekly group music classes on Zoom

  • Access to our online resources (practice videos, digital method books, flute recordings, printable activities, and more!)

  • A “Nuvo” flute (for an additional cost of $130)

Who is this class for?

This is the perfect class for 7-9 year olds that have never played, but have an interest in the flute! With this semester class, you will be able to “test the waters”to see if your child likes it before jumping into a full commitment and private lessons!

This is also perfect for kids entering their school band program in the fall and want to get a jump start on good tone, technique, and reading music!

What will my child learn?

The class will focus on the following key areas:

  • Tone (air & blowing, breath control, embouchure)

  • Technique (note fingerings, fine motor skills, muscle memory, progression to simple songs)

  • Posture (balancing points on the flute, sitting & standing posture)

  • Music Literacy (reading notes on the staff, rhythm, counting, steady beat, musical symbols)

  • Ear Training (song recognition, high & low, steps & skips)

Do we need a flute for the class?

Yes, you do need a flute for the class.
If you already have one, you are welcome to use what you have!

If you don’t have a flute yet, there are a couple of options:

1. Purchase a new flute. Student flutes range from about $800-$1400 new. Companies like Flute World, Flutistry, The Flute Center, or Windworks have the best brands and offer trials.

2. Look into used or rental options at your local music store.

3. Get a “Nuvo” Flute! Nuvo Instrumental is an amazing company that makes child-sized woodwind instruments for kids that are light-weigh, durable, budget friendly, and actually produce a beautiful sound! Many of our beginners ages 6-9 start out on the Nuvo jFlute 2.0 model and upgrade to silver flutes later on! This flute has a curved head-joint, which shortens the reach and makes it easier to reach the keys. It plays the full range and has all the same keys as a regular silver flute. It costs $130 and comes in a variety of color options.

  • Parents are more than welcome to attend! The more involved you are in your child’s music education, the better! However, we also understand and appreciate that 8-9 years olds can do a lot on their own! One of the goals for the class is to support each student’s budding independence and responsibility. So, as long as a parent or adult is home and in earshot of class to help with any tech issues, we are happy!

  • There will be 3-7 students in each class.

  • We know everyone’s schedules are crazy in the summer! If you are on vacation or are away and have to miss a class, you are welcome to do a make-up in any of the Flute Foundations classes! Or, attend one of our other flute group classes to meet students in our full flute program!

    We can also just fill you in on what you missed in that particular class and provide some resources for practice that week.
