Building Flute Community

One of our main priorities at Tutti Flutes is to foster a strong sense of community and provide rich experiences for students to connect through their passion for flute! We have developed several strategies of executing this across the online platform.

Teacher Collaboration

We are a team of five teachers that work together to ensure that each student in the program is successful and having a good experience in their lessons.

You will certainly develop a close relationship with your private lessons teacher, but we make an effort to make sure that all of the students get to know the other teachers too during studio events and recitals!

Flute Club

Flute Club is another component of the program that allows students to learn in a group setting! Classes are small, laid back, and welcoming! We pair students by age and sometimes by level. We review repertoire, play games, practice sight reading, and give students the opportunity to play their solos for each other. We also get to explore a fun variety of musical concepts that you might not always have time for in your regular private lessons! (Music theory, music history, conducting, etc)

Flute club is like a built in practice session and a great place to make some flute friends! It’s very fun and a great motivator for students!

Flute Club is optional, but we encourage everyone to reap the benefits and participate!

Recitals

Recitals are another big way that we build community and inspire students! We do 2-3 big studio recitals a year where each student gets the opportunity to perform a polished solo piece.

We split the studio into 3 separate groups: Young Beginners, Older Beginners/Intermediate, and Advanced. This ensures that the recitals don’t run too long and allows the students to listen to other pieces that are around their same level.

We encourage the students to invite their family and friends to log on and watch the recitals live! This makes it feel like a big flute party!

Participation in recitals is also optional. We never force anyone to play unless they want to (but most of our students do!) We work hard to ensure a non-competitive environment where each student is celebrated for their progress and individuality! We tell the students that recitals are a great way to hear lots of beautiful music and celebrate hard work!

Shared Repertoire

Each student in our program is on their own individual path with unique needs, interests, and goals. However, we do use the Suzuki Flute Method Books as our core curriculum and repertoire. This  not only ensures that each student has an exceptional foundation, but also allows us to play songs together! Shared repertoire also encourages repetition, increases motivation, accelerates artistry, and improves listening skills.

When a student finishes one of the Suzuki Books, we invite them to celebrate with a special solo graduation recital! They pick their favorite songs from the book to perform and we mail one of these graduation tassels in the mail! The whole studio is collecting them!

Flute Parties

Who says you can’t have a flute party on Zoom?…because we certainly do! We are 100% committed to making learning fun! We want our students to nurture their passion for flute and discover the benefits of community music making; even online! A few of our recent events have been:

  • December Holidays Party

  • Flute Craft Night

  • Glow-in-the-Dark Flute Party

  • Flute Yoga

  • Valentine’s Day Party

  • Flute Pajama Party

  • And more!

Workshops

We also offer more advanced workshops for our older students. This is a great opportunity for the middle and high schoolers to connect and expand their music education. Some topics we’ve covered recently are:

  • Audition Preparation

  • Posture & Body Mapping

  • Flute Beatboxing

  • Tone Workshop

  • Music History Night
