Approach to music lessons

Our approach to music lessons is simple; meet every student where they are! Our goal is to create a lifelong love of music through rich experiences and exceptional pedagogy. We are interested in building community, forming long-term relationships, and creating the optimal environment that supports each student’s unique interests, personality, and learning style.

Our teachers are not only highly trained musicians, but have extensive background and certifications in a variety of music education methods.

The Suzuki Method

The Suzuki Method is a music curriculum and teaching philosophy created by Japanese violinist & pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki. The basis of the philosophy is that children can learn music in the same way they learn to speak their native language! Parents attend the lessons and learn the instrument along with the child, creating a musical immersion experience. This allows parents to feel competent in helping with their child’s practice throughout the week.

Components of Suzuki lessons:

  • Parent/Caregiver involvment

  • Early start (Students can begin lessons around age 3 or 4, versus the traditional approach where they begin at age 9 or 10)

  • Listening & Observing

  • Play & Exploration

  • Encouragement

  • Learning from other children

  • Learning in small steps

  • Shared repertoire

Become a musical family, no prior experience necessary!

“Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.”

-Shinichi Suzuki

Child Led

As Julie Bogart says in her book The Brave Learner, “You can learn everything from anything and you can learn anything from everything!”

Whatever your child is passionate about, you can expect that we will embrace those interests in our lessons! This increases engagement and intrinsic motivation!

When we partner up with children in their education and collaborate with them (instead of forcing our adult agenda on them), the resistance fades and makes way for passion. With this approach, education is more than just things we must learn, it becomes a fulfilling creative endeavor.
