Purchasing a Flute:

If you already have a flute, please bring that to your trial lesson. If you do not yet have a flute, please hold off on purchasing anything. We are happy to help and can recommend specific brands & models.

If your child is younger than 10 years old, the full size flute is usually too long, so a flute with a curved headjoint is needed. This shortens the reach and makes it possible for young children to play comfortably. We will be able to tell you during your trial lesson if we think the student would benefit from a curved head-joint flute. (See chart below for an idea of what these “child sized” flutes look like!)

A few brands we love for student level flutes are Jupiter, Yamaha, Trevor James, Di Zhao, and Gemeinhardt. Nuvo flutes are excellent for young children and for families on a budget.

Be aware of cheap knock-off brand flutes on Amazon. These scam flutes have horrible tone and the keys break after just a month or two. (We know from personal experience!) This is extremely frustrating for the student and completely stunts their progress.

Please reach out to us with any flute related questions! We look forward to assisting you every step of the way on your flute journey!

A Closer Look at the Program:

  • Private lessons are the main component of the program and is where the majority of the skill building happens. This valuable one-on-one time with the teacher allows us to cater the lesson specifically to each student’s unique level, learning style, personality, and interests! Lessons for younger students include lots of games, movement, and play-based activities while lessons for advanced players focus on tone, technique, and building repertoire.

  • Classes are small, laid back, and welcoming! We pair students by age and sometimes by level. It’s a great opportunity to perform and connect with other flute students! We also play games, watch videos of the orchestra, and explore music history, conducting, and music theory concepts. Group class is extremely beneficial for the student’s overall musical progress and enthusiasm for the flute. It is an optional, but we encourage everyone to reap the benefits and participate!

  • Studio Recitals are online over Zoom. Students that want to participate will prepare a song to perform. One person plays at a time, everyone else is muted. Students are welcome to share the zoom link with their family & friends to log on and watch. We also allow students to pre-record their songs, if they are not available to perform live. We work hard to ensure a positive, non competitive environment at Tutti Flutes. The purpose of recitals is to share beautiful flute music and be inspired by our peers!

We also give students the opportunity to perform a special solo graduation recital whenever they complete a method book!

  • We love to get the whole studio together for flute parties a couple times a year! Recently we had a dress up Halloween party, a holiday gathering, flute craft night, a “Glow in the Dark” flute party, and flute yoga!

Specialized workshops with our expert teachers are usually broken down by age group. We have done workshops/lectures on audition preparation, posture, long-tones, music history, music & art, and more!
